the Wolf Oak Sessions

get inspired

See how getting outside can shake up your writing practice (in a good way). We gathered in the shade of a 300-year-old wolf oak tree in a local nature preserve to discuss some gorgeous contemporary nature poems and do some writing exercises that helped us really tune in to the site. Then we got out our trusty typewriters and made some poems inspired by the site to install at the site.

get crafty

Embracing our usual DIY imperfection-is-beautiful vibe, we got the poems ready to hang from the lower branches of the ancient tree. (We checked with the experts at the land conservancy that runs the site first to make sure our poems wouldn’t hurt the tree.)

get a stepladder

With our rickety stepladder and some twine, we hung poems and poem fragments from the branches of the wolf oak, which sits along a walking path. Even as we were installing the poems, hikers came along to ask what we were up to. We hope the installation will continue to spark curiosity. Hikers who stop to read the poems might take a closer look at the landscape around them and see it in different ways. They might even be inspired to write their own poems.
